We’re having morning coffee in Lisbon on the balcony of our hotel room. It’s a beautiful sunny day and we’re about to set off with Rick Steves guidebook in hand to see the city.
We arrived in the city at about 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 28. The plane trip was not pleasant, and there was a moment when we considered swiping our credit card to obtain those luxury seats offered at an additional $750 each. We landed safely, though, if a bit cranky. The Lisbon City Hotel is a great place, a few blocks from the river and from the lively Baxia district (pronounced, to our surprise, as BYE-shah). We went there after a few hours of sleep. We spent Tuesday walking around and getting our bearings and having some of the local wine, Vino Verde, which is white, crisp and slightly sparkly. Lunch was boiled prawns with a lime/mayo dipping sauce and some salt cod cakes and dinner was maybe the best grilled chicken we’ve ever had. Betsy is stopping back by the shop to ask about the spices. Hopefully, we can recreate it at home. We had dinner on our balcony and then went to bed early.
After coffee, we’re heading out to see St. Georges Castle, the Alfama district and as much as we can pack in. Tomorrow, we leave for Cascais and then on Friday, the walk begins. We’ll be walking eight miles a day for days on end. Wish us luck. -Kim
