Amazing Avignon

We walked Avignon just after sunrise, again around noon and again in the evening. Getting lost in the back streets and alleyways inside the city walls is an adventure. It’s really a beautiful city, and it’s full of tourists like us, but not as many as we had feared. We didn’t feel crowded by people.

Here are some scenes from our walks:

The market was so great yesterday that we are headed back over there this morning to buy a few things to take to the villa. The challenge, of course, is not to buy too much.

We’ll definitely be buying some of these spices. I can’t tell you how fantastic it smelled standing at this counter.

One glass of wine and one glass of Perrier. Betsy isn’t much of a wine drinker these days. Neck radiation does that to people…makes the throat sensitive to acidity. However, she can enjoy the occasional vodka/soda without lemon. She had a couple of those yesterday afternoon in a fabulous outdoor setting, while I had wine.

We’ve been following Rick Steves’ guidebook on this trip, as we have on every trip to Europe so far. We supplement with our research and some other books, but we do find his advice to be solid. The walk recommended yesterday was just perfect, and so was the restaurant for dinner last night.

These first two photos are of the restaurant and the setting in the day. We saw it on our walk and decided to return for dinner.

Those tables in front of the church belong to the restaurant. We sat close to the church.
Below is the view from our table at night. That’s an apartment with the pretty light on the left. Betsy said it was the apartment of her dreams.

I had a poultry dish. It was a delicious.

Betsy had the pasta with shrimp. She said the pasta was cooked perfectly.

Now, we’re about to walk to the market and then off to get our car and make our way to our villa. So excited!
