The call of the Eternal City

Italy! Kicking off this trip with three nights in Rome. We left our Nashville apartment around 6:45 a.m. Monday, Oct. 11 and arrived in our room in Rome at approximately 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 12. Lots of hours of walking, waiting, sitting, flying…but worth the effort.

The hardest part of leaving was leaving Mavis behind. And she seemed to want to go with us. But, the marvelous Sydney will be with her while we are gone and first reports are that Mavis is adjusting well.

We are staying three nights at Hotel Barocco, a boutique hotel in a great location. After a few hours of sleep, we walked around the city for a while to stretch our legs. We aren’t far from the Trevi Fountain and that whole lively area. We found a great outside table at a restaurant and enjoyed a big bowl of salad, which we craved, and then each ordered one of the traditional kings of pasta dishes. I had Cacio e Pepe…just fresh noodles, pecorino and black pepper, yet so much more than that. Betsy had Amatriciana, which had a fantastic tomato sauce and guanciale. Both were delicious.

We also had one of the best bottles of white wine ever. It was cold and crisp and perfect.

After supper, we joined that wonderful Italian tradition, the passeggiata and strolled through the city.

Now, it’s Wednesday, Oct. 13 and we are up and dressing for breakfast here at the hotel. Then we’ll hit the city streets. When last here, we saw the major sites, so today, we’ll just enjoy exploring.

A few more photos from our travels and first day:

The view from our hotel room.

Some kind of interesting glow-in-the-dark performance was happening last night.
