Oct 16: Lost

The route was supposed to be 9.5 miles from Spoleto to Poreta. We walked nearly 16 miles (40K steps) because we repeatedly got lost and had to backtrack.

First we walked 3 miles around Spoleto trying to find the route out of town. Then, we missed trail markers or there were none, and we found ourselves conquering a steep ascent and then a steep descent, only to have to turn around and go back up again.

The hotel/resort we stayed in is lovely and last night’s dinner was delicious. We also met a Scottish couple on a walking holiday with a different company and they were wonderful.

Today, we head to Trevi on a 7.5 mile hike, hopefully.

We were filled with such enthusiasm and good cheer as we left for our first day of hiking.

Beautiful spot on the way out of old town Spoleto

It looks like a roundabout, but it’s really the Devil’s Triangle. We walked in every direction from this spot multiple times trying to find the correct route. Bear right? Turn right? Turns out it wasn’t even the right roundabout.

The weather was crisp and cool and beautiful in the morning.

If all the waymarks had been this clear or even in existence, it would have been a much better day.

We love a cypress lined lane.

Following a white road reminds of our first-ever hiking holiday in 2008

We walked through and beside several olive groves, many times up the side of a mountain.

Oh Poreta. We should have been relaxing at our hotel for hours at this point, but still more than 5 miles to go, and more than that with the upcoming missed paths.

This view is from a much higher point than it appears, and we climbed there!

The dining room of our hotel.

Starters. Betsy ordered porcini salad and I ordered the special not knowing it was so many little plates of treats. I ate the green beans first, always in need of a veggie. We just sampled the rest.

Betsy’s rigatoni dish was delicious but too much to eat.

My carbonara was perfect.

We had planned to split this entree of braised beef, but we could only eat a couple of bites. It had an interesting chestnut puree.

We are going to get an earlier start this morning and make sure to stay on track.
Ciao!
